Compression Question
Posted by Flinter on January 20, 2006 at 4:27 pmI want to make a great looking DVD, one that does my source footage justice. So far the results using compressor and DVD Studio 4 have been less than great…anyone have any tips on making great looking DVDs.
Thanks

January 20, 2006 at 5:01 pmWhat have you done so far? You can only do so much with Compressor.
Hope this helps-

January 20, 2006 at 5:18 pmWell in Compressor I use the” best 90 min” setting and create an MPEG-2…then I import into DVD Studio 4 and burn. So I’m not sure where I am loosing the quality..but it sure does not look like a DVD you would rent at Blockbuster…and I’m not expecting it would but I loose a good deal of color saturation and the picture looks a liitle soft compared to the source…it is frustrating…can you offer any advice..
Thanks…

January 20, 2006 at 6:11 pmWhat is your original source footage?
Be sure to check your encode settings in compressor. I find the field setting can change everytime I load the same preset. One time it will be lower field, the next time progressive.
What are you watching your footage on? A broadcast monitor or just your computer?

January 20, 2006 at 6:32 pmIn this case, the source footage was shot on a Sony HDR-FX1 at standard definition NTSC. And it looks really good. I am monitiring on several monitors ranging from a large HD LCD to a small Trinitron. None of my monitors are pro but I know what they look like relative to a broadcast monitor…more or less…on these monitors the source footage looks great, but when I go to DVD and view on the same monitors the DVD quality is poor in comparison…milky blacks etc.
What are the best settings in Compressor to get good results? And is there anything else I can do in DVD Studio 4 itself….?
Thanks

January 20, 2006 at 9:20 pmI assume you used the 90min CBR because your program is 90 minutes. First your DVD will never look as good as your original footage, don’t expect it to. Your compressing the original by a factor almost 3 at a 90min rate. Try a VBR, it takes longer to encode but the the detail is better over long project, half hour or more. Next I take each and encode to just make it fit on the DVD so that I put all my little bits I can towards the picture. I compress the audio to AC-3 so that I can put more information toward the picture.
Try to do a 60 minute VBR and compress the audio to AC-3. You will put more bits toward the video giving you better resolution. No matter what you do color will suffer, it’s just the format Mpeg-2 problem. Do some test renders for the problem areas and find the settings that work best with your video, ALL video is not shot the same and doesn’t encode that way. To get maximum you have to find it, their is no silver bullet, just the magic you make with the tools.
Hope this helps-
