  • Created mpeg2 for backup, now audio won’t sync in timeline

I assume I am doing something what many FCPro users do; backup a movie as mpeg2 onto DVD.
My problem is that now that I am referring back to the .m2v file and accompanying aiff file, they are not in sync when I stick them back onto a FCP sequence. They are for first 10 min. or so, but then they drift by the end of the 20 minute project. Some creativecow users wrote that they do a straight AIFF output from the timeline instead of using Compressor (too late for this project), is that really the proper way to do it?

Here are the details of my woes with my 20 minute project:
1)I exported using compressor (chose 90 minute DVD setting and aiff for audio).
    2) I burned it onto a data DVD.
    3) Two months later I copied/pasted it back onto computer.
    4) I put it in timeline and the audio is not on.

    Thanks!

FCP really doesn’t edit MPEG-2 files for starters. It’s not supported. You need to demux the MPEG first (search this forum on that word: demux) , or recapture it (MUCH BETTER way to go) from your original project file. FWIW, MPEG is a delivery format pretty much. course HDV is mpeg…

I’d suggest that your backup procedure is flawed. Backing up original media on drives is the only way to really back it up so it’s a quick, high quality revisit… most editors don’t bother with this with most projects, but there are instances where it really makes sense. I do it a bunch because my clients revisit the same shoots for many different projects, and we redo videos yearly. There are many scenarios here.
