Does anyone out there know how to export an AE; FCP; or Premier project to a betacam SP tape and, most importantly, what guidelines I would need to follow? (IE codec’s, audio levels, legal colors, framing, field dominance)

    Thanks!

Contact a post house (or transfer house) that does that sort of thing and ask them what they need from you interms of a render on CD (or hard drive) from AE. If you can’t afford that (what, you can’t bill the client?), you need to know this:

    1. AE cannot capture from nor export to tape. You need FCP, Premiere, Avid or a similar NLE.
    2. To print to tape from an NLE, consult the manual.
    3. You need a capture/output card such as the Blackmagic Decklink that has component outputs.
    4. You need to render from AE to a codec that the capture/output card supports, then import that file into your NLE, then follow the NLE’s instructions.
    5. Video levels depend on how your NLE handles them. Use scopes in your NLE to ensure they are within brodcast safe. Check the manual.
    6. Field order (not dominance!) should match that of the capture/output card.
    7. In your NLE, add bars and tone to the sequence, then adjust the levels on the Beta deck so that goes into the deck as 0 dB.
    8. Framing? If I get you right, the frame size should match that of the capture/output card. For NTSC Decklink SP, it is 720×486 D1.

    Hope that helps.
