FCP Studio upgrade gone?
Posted by Andrew Schuurmann on January 18, 2006 at 8:33 pmDo I really have to wait until March 31st to get an upgrade copy of FCP Studio? I don’t see the upgrade for sale on the Apple site any more (just the full version). There’s a message about being able to buy the Universal version after Feb 1 (which won’t ship until March 31). Right now we’re on FCP 4.5, 10.3.8, dual 1.25 G4s. We’re planning to buy new CPUs and want to upgrade to FCP Studio at the same time, but I don’t want to wait until April to do all that! I want to upgrade now! (said in a whiny little kid voice)
Is Apple really doing this to us, or am I missing something?Andrew

This should get you to the LAFCPUG forum page. Scroll to the bottom and click on the Studio Upgrade icon. That’ll take you to Amazon.com. You’ll get a better price than if you go through Amazon.com proper

January 18, 2006 at 10:31 pmFrom the Apple site: How do I get the Final Cut Studio upgrade?
After February 1, 2006, visit Apple.com again for complete details on the upgrade program, including an order form. A Universal version of Final Cut Studio is expected to ship by March 31, 2006.Seems to me you only have to wait until Feb 1.

January 18, 2006 at 11:02 pmWell, you have to wait for the universal version. If you’re buying G5s you won’t need that. I’d wager that by the time you decide to get rid of those G5s you’ll already have moved on to FCP 6 so the fact that you have a Power-PC-only version of 5 probably won’t matter one bit.
But yes, it’s looking like Apple’s not interested in selling that to you. But others will. As was said earlier, Amazon can probably help. If they can’t check out Powermax or Smalldog. Someone will have it.

January 18, 2006 at 11:10 pmAs long as you’re REALLY careful, you can get great deals on Ebay. I bought the full studio version there at a very significant discount. But again, you have to be extremely careful that you find a non academic and brand new version. I had no problems registering the full version I bought.

January 18, 2006 at 11:33 pmIt might be worth waiting, if the Apple announcement at the last SF user-group meeting is to be believed. The price for the upgrade, allegedly, is going to be a low-low $199. For the whole Studio package; Final Cut 5, Livetype 2, DVD StudioPro 4, Motion 2, and so on. For two-hundred bucks. Sounds like a great deal to get everybody all up to the same speed. I’m pretty psyched to finally get up to version 5, having been with 4.5 for so long.
(Of course, this is what the reps from Apple said. Please don’t hold me to it. Your mileage may vary.)

January 18, 2006 at 11:44 pmThe word is that Apple is not going to sell any of their Pro Video tools separately any more. So, they are allowing everyone to reasonably upgrade to the Studio package before the stuff hits the fan.
That’s the rumor!

“How much does it cost to upgrade to Final Cut Studio?
To make it easy to move to Final Cut Studio, Apple is offering low-cost upgrades from retail versions of Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro, and Production Suite. When you take advantage of this offer, you
