  • lost the plot with capturing?? HDV timecode breaks

The issue of capturing HDV and FCP’s default response of creating a number of new clips was an issue a while ago and solved by going into “User Preferences” and changing the “On timecode break” from “Make new clip” to “Warn after capture”.

I’ve been capturing large chunks of HDV without any problems for months but now it isn’t working for me.

Basically it coninues to come up with a timecode break error message and doesn’t digitise any material. I’ve tried a whole number of settings but can’t seem to get anything to work.

It seems that the only way I’m capable of didgisting material now is to allow FCP to make a new clip with every perceived timecode break (HDV GOP gap from when the camera is stop/started).

What has changed? Is this a bug with the latest FCP update?
Am I llosing the plot and doing something wrong??

so out of desperation I’m using the ‘make new clip’ setting
however using this means it’s drops (doesn’t digitise) around 7 seconds of footage between each clip!!

    this is hopeless
    any advice????

You have to uncheck “create new clip on start stop” in the clip settings menu in the capture window as well.

Thanks Steve but this was one of the first things I checked.
I did plenty of searches and research before writing my post and read a bunch of Apple’s FCP documentation on HDV, timeocde breaks etc. I also tried out a bunch of things just in case it was FCP pilot error.

I just tested out a different tape from a different camera and it all works fine.

The problem tape was shoot on a Z1 and the OK tape on my own FX1. It seems that the Z1 is the problem but I can’t imagine why. The time code is consistent on the tape and there is no visible dropping of frames.
I still have tapes from the Z1 so I hope I can find a solution.

Has anyone encountered this scenario before?
