Print to Video Problem
Posted by Tim Clemons on January 15, 2006 at 6:35 pmSorry for the length. I have to deliver a DV master to a client in 3-days, and clearly need some help with this problem. It is a 48-min project edited in FCP 4.5. I posted a question several days ago about a Print to Video issue where I was seeing nothing but black going into a Sony DSR-11. Thanks to the Cow, that problem was solved. However, I am continuing to experience problems with PTV inexplicably going to black in the middle of the process (while the DSR-11 continues to roll). I have followed the advice on several forums and have done the following, in no particular order

January 15, 2006 at 6:56 pmIt looks like you are running Tiger, QT7, and fcp 4.5. This setup can be wrought with issues. Also, when you upgraded to Tiger, did you do a clean install, or an upgrade and install? Perhaps (since you have a 2.7) your machine already came with Tiger preinstalled.
One thing to try is to delete your render files, rerender, and see if that clears up the issue. The 2x400GB SATAs you mentioned, are those in a RAID, or is one a system disk and one a storage disk? Do you have anything else connected to your firewire port besides the DSR-11?

I agree that you should look at what JeremyG suggests. However, if you’re on a deadline and need to get this done, there is a Hail Mary that might work first, and then you can work on what JeremyG brings up to get your system back up to snuff.
Make a self-contained movie of your timeline, import it back in, and use that to make your tape. If FCP is having trouble accessing your media files, give it different media files to work with. Do this in a fresh project, just for good measure. Close up your original project after you’ve exported the movie.
Give it a try, and if it still conks out on you, post back and we’ll see if someone else has another quick idea! (Jeremy’s options will take the better part of a day, if done right, and we know you want to do it right!)

January 15, 2006 at 10:21 pmThanks Debe and Jeremy!
Jeremy: Tiger came preinstalled. Bought my box right when they announced the 2.7, around May 2005. Will try your suggestions on the render files, re-rendering, etc. My 2×400 drives are not RAID. One is system, one is storage. Nothing else is connected to Firewire, just the DSR-11. What problems are you referring to when you say my configuration is “wrought with issues”? What steps do you recommend to address the problems?
Debe: Great idea! Will try this to meet the deadline. Shortly thereafter will tackle Jeremy’s suggestion.

January 16, 2006 at 1:47 amIf it’s occuring at the same spot every time it sounds like it could be a corrupt file at that point. Is there a transition or effect at that point in the timeline? If so try just deleting that and re-creating it, if you dont have time to delete all render files.

January 16, 2006 at 2:37 amFCP 4.5 ran best on Panther (10.3.8) and quicktime 6.5.2. It doesn’t seem to work really well with QT7/tiger. I would recommend upgrading to FCP5, or downgrading your OS/ quicktime.
It’s a lot of work and will cost you some money, but it’s well worth the effort and price whichever way you choose to go. FCP5 would be the easiest as all you would have to do at that point is completely uninstall FCP 4.5 (search apple.com/support on how to do so) and go with new install of FCP5.

January 16, 2006 at 1:53 pmHad a feeling an upgrade to FCP5 would come up. Was trying to avoid that since I’ve already spent some major coin. Bought the entire Production Suite shortly before NAB, and fool that I was, it didn’t occur to me that Apple would come out with an upgrade. Should have known since many companies were scrambling to accomodate HDV.
If I could get my present config working properly, I’d be happy. I’ll keep plugging along following the great advice here on the Cow, but as a recent convert to Apple, I’m beginning to realize upgrades are a necessary evil.
Thank you all.
