motions in stills with Final Cut Pro end abruptly
Does anybody know how to solve this problem: I am editing a film with many photographic images that I am making moves on (such as with the Ken Burns films). The moves are very nice except when I come to the end of a pan or a zoom in or out. The moves don’t end smoothly – they come to a stop slightly abruptly. Am I doing something wrong or is is the computer? I’m working with an Imac G5 1.8 GHz, 1.5 GB Ram, a 250 GB external LaCie hard drive.

Two things
1) If you use FCP to accomplish the so called “Ken Burns” (motion control) effect it is lame and sucks compared to third party plugins such as moving picture or a very inexpensive lesser known program called Still Life.
Both of these programs were designed for motion control photo work and offer the ability to ramp the “camera” moves quite slowly.
Go on the web and google “Stage Tools- moving picture.
Still Life can be found at http://www.grantedsw.com
You can also use imovie for their version of motion control.

Tweak the velocity “handle” (really a purple dot) on the bezier handle to adjust the easing of a stop. Might wanna simultaneously loop it in QuickView and zoom in on the handle in the Canvas while you tweak. This technique is in my book….have not seen it elsewhere.

Another thing you can try is to dissolve between the moving stills. When doing so, drag the keyframe outside the clip’s in and out points so that during the dissolve the pictures continue to move. I use this technique very often. You won’t see any abrupt “stops” with this method.
