Problem doing insert or assemble edits w/ JVC DV6000
Posted by Steve Martin on December 22, 2005 at 4:48 pmI’m having trouble editing to tape (not print to tape)in FCP. I set the in point in the edit to tape screen and when I try to do the edit to tape, the deck pre-rolls normally and when it gets to the in point, instead of interting or assembling the timeline, it simply goes into play mode.
I’ve checked to make sure that the record tab in the tape isn’t moved and poked around the menus on the deck – but nothing is pooping out at me. I don’t think it’s a problem with FCP since I can insert/assemble to my BetaSP without any problem.
The config that we are using is:
FCP 5
AJA IO Box – using 9 pin controlAny thoughts on a hidden menu of “feature” on this JVC deck would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Production is fun – but lets not forget: Nobody ever died on the video table!

I don’t think that deck can do an edit to tape.
Have a wonderful day.

December 23, 2005 at 11:35 amI checked the specs at JVC’s site and insert/assemble edit are listed as features. It’s possible that FCP doesn’t play well with it. I would contact JVC.

Did you get this sorted out? I just bought one of these to replace an old deck, just curious. MIne hasn’t been delivered yet.
Also curious about your general opinions on this unit?
Have a wonderful day.

December 27, 2005 at 7:10 pmHi Chris,
Not sorted out yet – our studio is closed for the holidays so I haven’t spent much time thinking about it over the past week – but hope to get it resolved soon.
As for the deck, we really like it. Transport is solid and it plays back both DV and DVCAM which is nice – (but not DVCPro).

January 7, 2006 at 1:38 amI’m having this same problem. Changing the RS422 protocol from Sony to Panasonic in the Device Controls in FCP seemed to fix it for a bit but now I have new problems where it will go into edit mode and start recording but lay down completely random new timecode. I was curious if you found a fix or work around.

January 7, 2006 at 1:02 pmThat’s intersting Ian. I’ll give it a shot next week and post my result. Thanks for the tip and I’ll see if I can duplicate the random TC problem.

January 22, 2006 at 9:29 pmWell I got my JVC DV6000 to finally work with FCP. Here’s my solution for future reference.
If you are editing via the analog inputs & RS422 deck control
FCP 5:
In the device control presets in the audio/video settings, set the protocol to Panasonic RS-422 and the time source to LTC only.
Check “Use Deck Search Mechanism”
JVC-BR-DV6000:
In the Menu settings go to Remote – Rem FF/REW Mode. Change the FF/REW mode to “Search”.
Go to Menu setting – TC/UB/Clock. Change TCG Select to Regen. With these settings I am a able to use FCP to black and code a DV tape and then assemble edit a program successfully. Incidentally the “Black and Code” function in FCP has always worked with my DV-6000 not matter the settings but the edit functions will only work with the settings I have put here. I can only assemble edit onto the DV-6000, even though the specs say I should be able to insert edit. I vaguely remember insert editing when I first purchased the deck when I had FCP 4.0 (I will always try to insert over assemble – just personal preference) but since I hardly ever master or edit onto DV I’m not sure where or when that function was lost. I reinstalled FCP HD and still could not insert edit so I assume it was some time between 4 and 4.5
Another thing to be aware of, the DV-6000 will seem to insert the first frame of video at an incorrect time-code – like 5 or 6 frames before your selected in point, however subsequent edits will be correct. An example of this is if my edit in point is 59:30:00 and my program start is 01:00:00:00 the edit on the DV-6000 will start at 59:29:24 but my program in point at 01:00:00:00 will be correct. I now allow for this by having 10 sec of black before my bars or slates at the beginning of my programs.
DV editing:
I have not been successful in editing anything accurately using DV. I have tried the NTSC DV presets that come with FCP and I have created my own with no success. I have tried Firewire device control and Firewire Basic – neither give me accurate edits. Actually editing to tape to the DV-6000 using DV seems to completely inaccurate with programs starting at random in points and stopping at arbitrary out points.Anyway, this is what I have found from my tests. If anyone has had more success with the DV-6000 please let me know what configuration you are using, particularly if you have been able to insert edit. The manual for the DV-6000 explicitly claims that you should be able to insert edit via RS-422 and DV. I’m sure the good folks at JVC will undoubted say that this is a FCP problem. In any case, I don’t do enough editing to this deck for it to be a real issue however I really hate having a product that I can’t use to it’s full potential. Not being able to utilize features on this deck that are supposed to be standard really bugs me.
