I have just upgraded my system to FCP 5, and am having issues with dropped frames in timeline playback. I just started a new HD project, and initial capatures play fine until effects or layers are added. The sequence is HD1080i at 29.97 uncompressed 8 bit. Input was from Sony HDW 2000, HDCam. I have a Kona LH card, G5 2.0 running Tiger, 8 GB ram, Xserve Raid 4.4 TB benching at 210 Read/Write. All firmware upgrades have been installed… 1.5 for Xserve, 5.1.4 for G5, latest OS upgrades for Tiger, 5.0.3 FCP. I’ve tried all the usual tricks to get timelines to play… RT is safe, QTime files xported and reimported, but still dropped frames. One QT file shows transfer requirements of 16.4 mbps but still won’t play! I’ve spent time on the phone with Apple ($50) and Kona support, and it appears everything is set and installed correctly. Any ideas? My project is super time intensive, with a play date of Jan 3 at CES. Needless to say, I’m concerned… many sleepless hours. I would appreciate any input, tricks, etc. Thanks!

Do a search of all posts and archives as this has been asked many times by many people, including myself! I was able to find quite a few threads, some of which said the same things, some had other ideas. Real-time settings, internal HD vs. external firewire drives, journaling off on your internal HDs, overlays and other sequence settings, fully rendering your sequence, exporting the entire sequence and then reimporting, capturing short clips rather than a whole tape, etc.

Good luck in your search – I have been going step by step and still haven’t figured out the problem. I never get them during capture, only playback and edit to tape, print to video.

How big of an issue is journaling with an Xserve Raid? I did select “extended with journaling” when creating this array.

I would re-format if you can w/ Journaling OFF
