was wondering what type of drive is recommended for dvcpro hd editing. will be on a dual G5 as well as a lot of editing will be on a powerbook G4 so external will be my best option. since the hvx footage will be transferred from p2, no capture will be necessary(and no degradation, according to search from a previous thread). i’m looking into the g-raid, medea, as well as a sata or raid solution. don’t want something that won’t be able to handle the footage as well or something overkill. for those editing dvcpro hd, what type of storage would you get(or currently using)? any suggestions to get me in the right direction? thanks!

I am editing DVCPRO HD and am using G-Raids with no problem. I am using G-Raids primarily due to the workflow of needing these drives to be portable as capture drives on location…because of the P2 cards. I would have preferred to get an external SATA Raid…and suggest you do so.

But the G-Raids are fine. I use them, Walter uses them, and I know of 3 post facilities that use them for DVCPRO HD and uncompressed 8-bit work.

thank you shane. i’m leaning toward the sata raids as well. how many streams of rt are you getting w/ the g-raids? also, any recommendation on an external sata raid? much appreciation!

I can get 2 streams of realtime DVCPRO HD…supposedly supposed to get 3, but only tried two thus far.

thanks again shane. was wondering if there is a sata pcmcia card if i wanted to edit w/ sata drives on a powerbook? or is firewire 800 my only option?

The P2 card IS a PCMCIA card. Unfortunately it currently does not work on a Mac. PCs, yes, but not Macs. Apple says they are working on this, and that it is firmware/driver issues. So the only option is to connect via usb 2.0 to the camera or card reader to an external firewire 800 hard drive.

You cannot edit this footage directly on your powerbooks HD. You need AT LEAST a fw800 drive. This is HD after all.

There is a SATA PCMCIA card on the market right now. I spoke to a G-Tech guy at DV expo yesterday and he said they are in the process of running tests right now on their SATA raids with this card. He didn’t have any conclusion yet but said so far there was a slight performance gain over the G-Raid on firewire 800. Here’s a link to the card.
