FCP5, Firewire and XDCAM mobile deck PDW-V1
Posted by Jen Bradwell on December 6, 2005 at 12:52 amHi… has anyone had success with this combination? I want to digitize IMX50 footage as DV, and I’m looking for a field edit solution that’s cheaper than renting a PDW-1500. The 1500 is on the Apple list of qualified devices, but the V1 is not.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

December 6, 2005 at 3:38 pmIt works just fine for me. I use it in our edit room as a backup machine and a secondary machine since money is tight around here, too. We do have one PDW-1500 that we use for our record deck but I have two edit stations and two PDW-1500s were a little above our budget this year.

January 16, 2006 at 8:58 pmHow about using the PDW-D1? We are attempting this, and having poor results.
The D1 has NO controls on deck, it is designed to be used as a ‘drive’ in either ‘FAM’ – File Access Mode or AVC – like a tape deck.
You use a PC with an application to set the deck to not allow FAM mode- and this seems to work on the PC.
But as soon as you plug the firewire into the Mac, FAM light activates on deck.
FCP log and capture says deck is fine- but preview is disabled and there is no machine control. It seems I had this working once a couple weeks ago- but can not get it to go now.
Any ideas?

January 20, 2006 at 2:43 pmI also use this machine, too. I have it installed on my computer as of the moment. I capture with it just fine. Use the same capture settings as you would for the PDW-1500 but choose firewire as the machine control. Make sure that the PDW-V1 is not set to Network or Local but set it to Remote. Do not enable the PC Remote in the menu.
Just select an Easy Setup that works with your capture card, such as, for an AJA Kona2, select AJA KONA2 – NTSC 8 Bit Uncompressed and then change the Device Control Preset to Firewire NTSC or Firewire NTSC Basic. I have made my own setup that captures usning the Kona2 to input SDI and compress it to IMX50 codec using Firewire control. It works just fine. I have preview and full machine control.
