    I am comping toon shaded 3D renders with photography backgrounds.
    I would like to treat the backgrounds so they look more toon shaded and intergrate with the 3D better.

    Anyone have a recipe they want to share?
    Are there any tutorials for this?

    I tried a simple posterize, but that does not look too good.

    11 posts down from yours — you can download Tyler’s files and then in the project window control click Tyler’s movie “Everythingilluminated.mov” and “replace footage” with your file… read Tyler’s readme.txt for good instructions on how to midify the look….

    In your case, since you only need to make still images look tooned, check out live trace in adobe illustrator CS2.

    I also have a tutorial with a cartoonification technique that utilizes live trace, but it’s fairly complex. It requires both Illustrator CS2 and After Effects. It’s a 3-part video tutorial that you can find here:
