  FCP5 & 24p – Weird Artifact

  Hello,

  Question:

  After we’ve captured our footage (supposedly shot in 24p Normal) and put it through Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown (the short will get a film output), I can see those slight vertical lines across the image — they’re more visible between dark and light areas, and of course the larger the image is on the screen.

  – We are using the NTSC Easy Setting 29.97fps to capture.
  – We then put the footage through Cinema Tools to do the pulldown (the “Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine” option in FCP5), but the lines keep on showing up.

  What is going on?

  My assumption is that you are seeing the C-frame artifacts of 20.97 >23.98 conversion. The footage you shot is really segmented frames and on the C-frame reconstruct from 29.97 the 4th frame of every 5 frame set can show the interlace artifacts it often just looks “mushy”

  OR

  you did not check to see you were on a ” 1″or “5” frame when your ran cinema tools and the cadence is off in the converted footage.
