Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy PCI-E upgrade

I am upgrading my suite… Video Card, Raid, GFX card, Ram. I have a Cinewave suite at present. With the PCIe change-over, I am having to buy cards that are PCIx to go with my dual 2 G5. I guess that I am right that any PCIe hardware will NOT work with my current G5. I am wanting to replace the G5 in a year but then I would have to replace the stuff I am getting this week to go with a new quad as PCIx won’t work with the quad.

    Correct??

You’ve got it right. PCI-X & PCI-E are not compatible. If you just want to jump into a dual-core, I think the only cards available now are AJA’s Kona LHe, which does both HD & SD, or the Black Magic Decklink Extreme, which is SD only.

If you only need SD, though, maybe you’d be better off with an IO for the short term?

Last I heard (which was last week) from my reseller, there is NO fibre card out there that will allow you to connect your Quad G5 with an XRaid. Just throwing that out there. The apple site shows a PCIe fibre card and says “Ships within 2 weeks” but again last I heard that was some total BS, and you will get a regret letter if you order it.

For this reason we are staying with out Dual 2.0 because we simply must have somewhere to store the video. I can’t believe that this is still a problem, but apparently it is.

I am now waiting on the Macintel box to come out. We figure everything will change then anyways, and any Quad we bought now would just be out of date next summer.
