    want to know if FCP is a good solution to use in a live production enviroment, like a sports event. Wanting to use it for editing, playback, and live keying if possible. Maybe a Kona card of Blackmagic card. Can it key a bug live over a stream of video that is just passing through a card? The idea being using 2-3 FCP setups hooked up fiber to a SAN solution, one system is just used as a pass through for live keying, the other systems used as editing and playback, trying to figure out if this is possible…any thoughts?

    Nope.

    FCP is not for live production.
    It is “editing/post production” software.

    FCP can’t take a “live” feed and do “anything” to it.
    It works from captgured HD files.

    Blackmagic cards can do live keying.

    There are better solutions than FCP out there.

    FCP needs to digitize anything to work with it. That , almost by definition takes you out of the “live” arena and into the “post” world.

    Look at something from Sony called the “Anycaster” for around $20K or the “Tricaster” from NewTek, the company that created the “Video Toaster”. These tools are much more appropriate for a live environment. FCP just ain’t designed for that.

    Correct me if I am wrong, didn’t the NFL or MLB (or FOX) do something like that for the Superbowl or World Series a few year back?
    I thought I read it on the Apple site under the pro video/film section.
    I can’t find it now.
    Just a thought.

    in its plain vanilla form FCP is not going to be especially suuitable for a “live” production workflow

    can (and has) been done though … take a look over at https://www.gallery.co.uk/ , they have some products which will make your life much easier. Picture Ready and VirtualVTR seem especially suitable … and you might want to keep an eye out for Peter Wiggins, a regular here on the Cow. I beleive he has worked with these products

    That was a cool story, thanks for the link, Peter.

    Some package those dudes ran. Must have been in the $100-$150,000 US range.

    I also noted the use of “hairy” and “unsettling” more than once to describe the pressure of ingesting and going directly to air from an untested configuration.

    Wrong……I know Nascar and the Super Bowl used FCP in a live enviroment…..thks though…

    Yes and Nascar……thats why Im asking, I know I read that people were using it in live productions….

    I used the ANycast this weekend in my show with FCP as my playback system…..thought I read that you could use Blackmagic cards to do live keying….I know Nascar has done this as well as the Super Bowl
