November 15, 2005 at 4:18 pmQmaster, which comes with a standard FCP 5, DVDSP 4 or FCP Studio install will allow you to create a cluster for faster render times in Shake, Maya and other Unix apps. It also allows for faster encoding or transcoding from within Compressor. We’ve got four G5 machines set up in a simple cluster with our server acting as the cluster controller. It just rips though those MPEG-2 encodes now. H.264 encoding is almost bearable now.
As Kevin mentioned above, FCP still does not take advantage of this feature. Some day possibly. It’s not for a lack of asking. Heck, FCP still can’t even do background rendering, even though OS X if fully multi threaded.
