  Varicam Editing in FCP

  I am editing a feature film shot on the Panasonic Varicam/ 24 fps/ 720P in FCP 5
  We are going to imput the tapes on the AJ 1200 deck- Here is the question/ dilemma:
  We only have the weekend with the deck, and no HD monitor for Post production. Should we down convert the footage
  to NTSC 29.97 & edit in 29.97, so we can use a monitor & DV deck… later export EDL , and ON LINE with the HD?
  Or can we actually edit in native HD- 24fps- without a monitor? Can we assemble a rough cut with only the
  computer monitor- will it be in sync? (the audio is on the tape) I need advice today- we are renting deck thursday-
  Any HD editors out there? Help!

  I would say to stay at 24p if you are going to do an online either way. A broadcast monitor is most important at the online stage…but for put the cut together, you should be good just using your computer monitor…in my opinion.
