Delay shipping new dual-core Powermacs?
Hi all,
Just checking in to see if anyone has had any trouble getting a new dual-core Powermac shipped? I ordered a dual-core 2.0ghz on Oct. 26th, with an original ship date of Nov. 1st. I then got an email saying that my Final Cut Studio had shipped, but that my Powermac had been delayed until Nov. 8th for shipping (I even called Apple and they told me that was a firm date). So I check my email this morning only to have another email from Apple saying my order has been delayed AGAIN, this time until Nov. 21st!! I ordered it for a project that essentially starts next week, thinking I wouldn’t have any trouble getting it in time (which in retrospect was obviously foolish).
Has anyone had delays like this before? Will calling Apple to complain help at all? Maybe they can upgrade my system if the 2.0ghz systems aren’t available (that’s wishful thinking). Any suggestions??

We had placed an order about a month ago with the Dual G5 2.7. Apple called us around the 15th and asked if we wanted to change our order to the newest Dual Core G5, which we decided to. From our correspondance with Apple, they have estimated the ship date to be November 18, 2005. (Even got it marked on the calendar!) From the websites and hearing people talk, this seems to be the correct date, –which Apple has always told us and had on their website. I don’t know why they would of told you that you would have it on the 1st unless you were testing it for them, and the rest of the world mid to late November. But people, salesman in particular, will usually tell you something which may or may not be true just to get the sale. 🙂 Who knows…. But seriously, Apple has had posted on their sites and in their articles the ship date would be mid/late November.

I just called Apple and the customer service rep told me that he thinks the reason my system was delayed was probably the nVidia Geforce 6600 256mb video card I upgraded to. They offered to ship me a stock system with the 128mb card within 24 hours. The only problem with that is that I require the Airport wireless, which doesn’t come with the stock model. Is there any way to add Airport to a Powermac after it has shipped? I’m guessing that I’d have to install some sort of card, which would take up an available slot? I suppose I could just use a generic USB wireless unit, but I hear those aren’t the greatest. The way my workspace is setup just doesn’t lend itself to using wired internet (the connection is several rooms away). Suggestions?

Hah, so it looks like an Apple reseller right around the corner from my apartment has the Dual-core 2.0ghz in stock right now. I’d have to settle for the 128meg stock video card, but since it might be 2-3 weeks before the 256 6600 is even available, I’d rather not wait. I’m already late starting on this project…
Is it possible to buy video cards from Apple without having them as part of a custom built system? Or can I buy them from 3rd party retailers?

You’ll always get a better deal buying somewhere else than Apple. The only difference might be things like a video card or a hard drive where you’re getting the drive or card upgraded. Since going somewhere else whould mean you’d essentially have to buy both cards.
If airport hasn’t changed, it’s just a card inside the box that you slide in. No extra slots needed. Open the door. Insert card, close door. At least it was that simple on the G4s. I would think airport extreme and G5s would be even easier. I think cheaper too. $50 I think.

I’m confused. The stock card is the NVidia 6600. The 7800 is the upgrade.

I was looking at the dual core 2.3, not the 2.0.
