  which compression for 320×240 videos?

  It’s been quite a while since I last made a CD-ROM with 320×240 movies. Now I need to do a language version of an old project and I wonder what’s the current state of art in small videos for CD-ROM. What compression in Quicktime do you guys currently recommend?

  PJ,

  As I recall only mpeg4 can be used for this. Or was it mpeg 1, anyway when you use Toast it automatically encodes it and it looks like crap. Why don’t you do a DVD?

  I used to use Sorenson 3 and it was quite OK. Just wondered if something better was around.

  I don’t do a DVD because then I would have to start from scratch. With the CDROM I more or less just exchange the movies.

  That’s just a VideoCD that you’re talking about. And they can look quite good. But the crap you’re talking about would be the line doubling. Since he’s doing a CD rom, and download bandwidth isn’t an issue, mpeg 1 is the way to go. It’s the best bet for compatibility.

  So MPEG-1 is best.

  And what’s the best way of reducing to 320×240? With Quicktime – or can it be done with Compressor?

  And how about cropping? Do I need to enlarge the footage in FCP before exporting? Or is there a more elegant way?
