  • External Hard drive Data Recovery Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Yoyodude on November 1, 2006 at 10:21 pm

Ok, here is the problem. I’ve been shutting my mac down without dismounting my external hard drives first. I’ve been doing this for about 3 years now, and now it appears to have corrupted something in my western digital hard drive to prevent it from being recognized. I tried to fix it myself with the standard mac disc utility, but it says that there is an error in reading the hard drive. I took it to OC data recovery and they said that its going to cost $2000 to recover the data because there are mechanical failures that require it to be serviced in a lab. Is there anything that I can do to repair it myself? $2000 seems outragious. Is there anywhere that might be cheaper? Are they ripping me off? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!! HELP!!!!

Every time I have had an external HD fail, it has only been the chassie. You can replace that pretty easily with a small screwdriver. New chassies are availabe at Best Buy. It will require you to break a seal on the existing external dirve that says “Do not break this seal,” but whatever.

If it is the drive, Disk Warrior is generally conisidere the best for Mac. If has always worked for me, and even though it is $80, that is a lot cheaper then your data recovery place.

Throw the drive away and buy a new one and copy your most recent backup to the new drive. (you did back up your data over the last 3 years right?)

Then make sure you unmount before shutdown from now on. And back up often.
HDDs that sit on a shelf as an archive RARELY die, HDDs that are used daily have about a 3 year life span.

My geek tells me that data recovery is very expensive (as you found), because they need to remove the platter in a clean room, and once it’s exposed to air, they have about 45(?) minutes to get the data before the platter becomes useless. So it’s an expensive process, only worth it if the data is worth that much.

Sometimes we get a warning, sometimes not. It might not have anything to do with your habits — sometimes, drives just die. Sad, but true.

… but the cheaper solutions sometimes work. If they do, consider yourself lucky and get the data off that drive, then toss it out.

Have you tried to use the disks on another computer? Even if they don’t work on a Mac, they may still be readable on a PC. There are some tools out there that may be able to reconstruct your data, but the first thing you should do if you ever can revive your disks is to do a full RAW data read and copy that to a safe location. All otehr operations can then be done on the backup data, not the originals on the disk.

Data recovery service cost too much. Price depends upon the service required to get back your data. You can look for more option on google, there are lots of data recovery company. One such company which I am aware of is Stellar Information Systems Ltd, deals in data recovery software and data recovery services. They will perform free analysis of your hard drive and send you the report. If you are satisfied by the result then the recovery process will take place. For more information visit: https://www.stellarinfo.com/data_recovery_services.htm
