I get to choose a camera (plus accessories), which I will be allowed to keep after a 1-month shoot in AFRICA (Kenya, Uganda).

It’s a doc on orphans of war and AIDS.

I will edit the movie when I return on G5 dual 2.5, FCP 5.

I currently do it all commercials movies, docs, cable shows, etc,
    With 2 pd-150’s.

    What camera should I request…?
We are leaving on November 26th. I am hoping the Panasonic 200 will be out.
But it doesn’t look good. And it doesn’t look like the 100b will be out either : (

so, would you get the Panasonic 100a or the Sony HVR-Z1U?

All input would be greatly appreciated.. I am confused.

I’d get the Panny 100A. I’d avoid HDV at all costs.

the sdx 900 looks big and not very africa friendly..

the first thing it says on many kenya and uganda sites is.. don’t bring a lot camera equipment it will get stolen or get you killed.. yikes.

I am going to places that … that.. well.. lets say, they are not tourist destinations..

    ANy more suggestions..

I have heard from many people that the sony is NOT the way to go. The main reason I like the sony is the low low light shooting. And it is kinda painful to buy the panasonic 100a when the 100b and the 200 are just around the corner.

Dude, don’t you know that everything is big in Africa? Wait till you see the mosquitoes. 😉

I was saying the SDX 900 purely from a look and cost advantage, rather than a practical travel around the world view. As far as the 200 and 100B being around the corner, they are not here yet. You have to buy what is here now so you can shoot now.

Because HDV is HIGHLY compressed Mpeg-2…has trouble recording fast action and whip pans (the image gets REALLY blocky)…and then in the editing phase, difficult to edit. If I were to go HD, I would go DVCPRO HD. With the new panasonic coming out, that is becoming more affordable for the lower cost productions.
