  • AJA LA audio problem into FCP

I recently got an AJA LA for Live capture into FCP and am having trouble getting audio into it. I’m running a single S-video input into the unit and “Channel 1 In” and “Channel 2 In” of the XLR breakout cable are coming out of my main outs of my audio console. I currently have the capture preset set at “AJA Io LA: S-Video 8-bit NTSC US 720×480 48KHz” (just the normal S-video 8-bit setting, but changed to 720×480 instead of the default 720×486). Audio is unchanged at “Device: ProIO In”, “Input: Analog – 4 channels”, and “Rate: 48KHz”.

I get audio levels on my board and in our backup SVHS record deck, but there are no audio levels on the meters in FCP before I hit Capture Now and then (of course) no audio on the captured clip. Am I missing a setting somewhere or any thoughts on why the audio is not getting into the system?
    Thanks.

Well, first of all, why are you changing from 720×486 to 720×480? If you want the 720×480 frame size, you should work in DV and not uncompressed 8 Bit. That might be one of your problems, don’t know why this would happen, but maybe.

Next, if you are in FCP5 click on the clip settings tab of the log & capture window and make sure the tickbox for both video and audio are selected and that the proper channels are turned on for your audio settings (channels 1&2, dual mono, stereo, whatever you want).

I changed it since I thought FCP worked exclusively in 720×480 for standard def video. Since this is all I’ve ever done in the past, my viewpoint is admittedly limited. I assume I would need to change the sequence settings and such as well?

But, assuming this is not the problem (seems like I’d notice at least some sort of a video issue and not only audio), any other possibilities? The audio settings in the capture window are indeed set to Channels 1&2. Incidently, I’m still on FCP4.5, but the Log & Capture window does have that feature also. I had originally thought this might have been the problem as well, so it was the first thing I checked. Although, usually even if that’s set to Video Only, I still get audio levels in the meter before recording…
    Thanks again.

Has the audio ever worked on this LA? If you capture from a professional tape does the audio work (ie from a BetaSP or similiar deck)? DO you have reference going to the LA? How exactly is your system set up? ARe you using deck control, or is it set for a non controlled device? Have you downloaded the latest firmware? Do the little lights on the front correspond to the setup you are trying to use? Are you sure you are going into the LA ins? Is that breakout cable fully plugged in?

No, the audio has never worked. We just got it and this is the only application we’ve tried with it. We do not use a reference. It’s set for non-controllable device (video input into the LA is coming directly from a switcher and audio directly from a sound console). I have not downloaded the latest firmware…I’ll check for that. The lights do correspond correctly, but unfortunately, it doesn’t have any audio indicators. Not 100% on the audio cables being the correct ones, but they are female XLR which corresponds to my male XLR main outs of my console, so I’m assuming this is by design. The breakout cable would appear to be fully plugged in–XLR’s are clicked fully into the console and the other end seems screwed tightly into the LA.

Do you have a deck you can try and digitize from?

Try sending it audio from any other source other than the console to see if it works there.

It sounds like you have everything set up correctly to me. You might want to send a blackburst or composite reference from the switcher to the ref in if possible. Check for the newest firmware and drivers. Also, you should try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers. If none of this works, I’d call AJA and see what they say, you might have a bum box. If that is the case they will send you an advanced replacement right away. Good guys/gals over at the AJA camp.

You have powercycled the ioLA I take it?
