Good Book on Color Correction?
My whole career, I’ve almost exclusivly dealt with source footage that has already been finished and color-corrected.
That’s slowly starting to change so I’d like to add color-correction to my skill set. I only know the basics, like how to keep something broadcast legal and how to adjust the VS and WFM to NTSC bars.

One of the best books on this topic is by Steve Hullfish and Jaimie Fowler, “Color Correction for Digital Video: Using Desktop Tools to Perfect Your Image”

I guess it also will be a chapter of any good book about color correction:
get the right hardware according to your workflow. you need to monitor the right way or your adjustments will be wrong:– allway monitor the same video signal you use for edit to deck:
if you go via SDI to digiBeta, the best way is to connect your monitor with SDI too
– use a high resolution monitor with EBU phosphor. its expensive but really worth the money (WYSIWYG)
– adjust your monitor. the respective chapter of the FCP manual is’nt bad to learn how
– think about getting a hardware VS & WFM, feeded with the same video signal as your monitor:
you will get realtime metering while your sequence is running. an even better solution as standard VS & WFM meters is one of Tektronix rasterizer (WFR610, etc..): they also show you gamut problems (video out of allowed color space) and are great to identify problem areas within an image
– if editing HD and you are monitoring with SD equipment, be shure that the downconverter/videoboard you use does color space conversion from HD->SDall the best,

I’ll second the above recommendation. Be aware that the book uses Color Finesse in its examples (a very good but expensive FCP plugin but the demo is free.).
Intelligent Assistant (Phillip Hodgetts) has a good tutorial CD that’s FCP specific. “Practical Color Correction for FCP.”
Now if only Apple would get Hue Match to work more accurately.

I have some info on the FCP Color Corrector in my book, “Motion Graphics and Effects in Final Cut Pro”. The color correction portion is on the basic side, but very easy to understand. What makes my book different is that I show how to achieve color effects as well, such as a few tricks using the Limit Effects function.
