20m firewire
Posted by Dennis Allen on October 27, 2005 at 5:39 pmI just moved my system (G4 duel 867, fcp 4.5) from one room to another using a 20m firewire cable. I’m not getting any signal to the breakout box (Aja Io)

October 27, 2005 at 5:50 pmThat might be just a bit too far. You’ll probably need something like this:
Search B&H for “Firewire Repeater” to get more options…that’s just one example.

Maybe there is a reason the cable that came with your Io is only 2 meters, I do not recommend you use that
extender on the Io, it will cause a number of problems.
limit for most FW cabling is 5 meters or 15 feet repeaters are not recommended for use with the Io at all.Gary Adcock

October 27, 2005 at 10:38 pmHey guys, this ain’t SCSI.
FireWire can make longer runs with ease.
I’d suspect a faulty FW cable (or end) in this case.
We operate with 80 ft. to 100 ft. FW cables between the FCP Macs and the machine-room DV decks every day.
That’s not with an AJA I know, but it controls the deck and sends/receives A/V just fine.
With cameras we have used several long FW cables.
Two cameras at over 75 ft., and one camera thru FW cables connected end-to-end for over 200 ft. run with perfect images into the FW switcher.
We thought we might have a problem, but it worked great. -

Without expensive custom cable configurations, you cannot get that distance and it is not recommended. I have run FW cables to +300 ft, but the data transfer and deck controls I got proved to me it was not reliable. That Io is handling far more data than just a Dv stream also.
This is not a recommended installation for an Io. The IEEE 1394 spec says not to extend cables beyond 5 meters. This is for video, not data transfer to some low power FW drive.

Absolutely will second that. Instead of running long video / FW cables here, we’ve actually moved the G5’s out of the rooms using 75′ cables for the monitors and keyboard. The two G5’s live in one rack unit along with all the various VTR’s and storage so it’s all in close proximity.
This also makes the edit suites essentially silent.
