  I understand it’s a lossy format, but why would certain jpegs that look fine in different computers and in preview mode suddenly become unfixably bad when brought into FCP? And also into IDVD. They get so contrasty that much detail are lost in the shadow area. We figured out that if we export them from preview in a high quality jpeg or PNG format they will stay the same, but it’s time consuming and seems it shouldn’t be necessary. Any insights appreciated.

  Probably has to do with:
  a) the way you are rendering them: Are you in Safe RT, Do you have the dark green “FULL” bar checked in the Sequence>Render menus? Have you rendered them at all or are you viewing them in Dynamic Preview?

  b) the way you optimized them in photoshop

  c) worse yet, you avoided optimizing them in photoshop

  d) you are not viewing the rendered results on a video monitor: you should work with a video monitor connected at all times when using FCP. FCP is more than an app, it’s a system–set it up to spec for more predictable results.

  e) JPEGS simply suck for post. Period. Avoid them at all costs for post-production, if you can. NO need to use them unless the original was a JPEG.

  Thanks Kevin,
  We do indeed have a video monitor to check. It was too much of rush job to experiment and learn fully from the experience, but it worked to change the ones in CMYK or greyscale to RGB and resave in PNG format. What format do you feel is best to use for post – I’ve heard both PNG and TIFF?
