Jittery Still Images

Sorry if this one has been covered a million times, but I’m hoping someone can help me out. I’m adding some digital still images from my Canon 20d to a commerical i’m producing in Final Cut Pro 5, when they play in the timeline and output to my NTSC monitor they are jittery. Does anyone have a quick solution for this problem?

You’ve got that right.
That’s what the SEARCH POSTS is for, you can find your answer in seconds.

But no mattter, here it is again:

You should not attempt a serious edit by only looking at the computer monitor for judging quality.

FCP is designed as an editing SYSTEM to be operated with an external video monitor connected
(through a camcorder is just fine) DURING the edit process.
The external video monitor would have shown you that many video “freeze frames” will wiggle, dance, jitter, flicker, etc.

This Still-frame “flicker” is absolutely normal and is due to the fact that video “frames” are actually made up of TWO “fields”.
If there is a lot of ACTION (or motion) in the frame you chose to “freeze”, the 2 fields will appear slightly different from one another and will jump back-and-forth between themselves, over and over during the “freeze”.

To solve the problem, just add the “Flicker Filter” or, better still, the “De-Interlace Filter” to the freeze(s).

Again, if you watch the external monitor, you will see the flicker go away after a filter is applied.

Matte,
Please re read my post as i stated rather clearly I was outputting to an NTSC monitor and still getting this flicker.
I’ve ended up reinstalling FCP 4.5 and doing the project in there as 5 is just having some very weird problems.

These issues have seemed to clear themselves up in 4.5, however i’m still having some transition problems.

You “stated rather clearly” that you thought this was probably a common problem.
I just performed the SEARCH POSTS for you.

And, from the basic nature of your question, it never hurts to cover all aspects of a problem for the original poster and for those lurkers out there who are searching for answers to their problems.

You probably need to turn the Video Processing Motion tab setting to Best Quality. Normal will not yield great results with stills.

In the future, doing a Search Posts first will usually bring up some answers faster as this has been answered several times in this forum.

Deinterlace filter has done the trick since FCP 1.0.
