Multiple Projects opened at all at once. Haw many is too many?
Hello.
Newbie at FCP, just switched from Avid.I have a client that has 9 subdivisions. Each subdivision has 2 TV spots that they update monthly. All 18 spots have to go out on the same tape every month. To streamline the heck out of this client I plan to have a project for each subdivision and then have a “Master Project” that when opened has all of the subdivision projects already opened in it.
Will this get too big and have effects on the performance of FCP. Should I just make it a bunch of bin directories instead?
Any advice would be highly welcomed.

Put as much RAM in your computer as you can.
With spots you probably dont have huge amounts of associated footage (compared to long form work). Personally, I would use one project with bins for each spot, but if you want to work with multiple projects you should be fine.

I’ve had up to 4 projects open at the same time with varying amounts of footage, but don’t do this as a regular thing.
I would just create a Master Project and create a Bin for each subdivision. Remember, you can create Bins inside of Bins to help organize even further.
At some point, maybe every three to six months, you could just create a new Master Project and clear out the older, unneeded stuff and start over.

Thanks for the quick replies. I think I’m going with the 1 project with the bins inside of bins inside of bins inside of….
and then clearing it out every couple of months. Maybe even keep a “empty” project template and duplicate it every month to start fresh. I’ll see how it goes.Quick aside…

Very kind of you to say that. I have learned much from my mentor, the great “Obi Wan Hoffman.” The beautiful thing about these forums is that with a host of leaders up there, you’re not relying on just one person’s advice. We’ve got a great team all over the pastures and I’m glad we can all help folks learn from our mistakes!
