  • Best way to invest in new G5 Quad’s? What to buy for it…

Im going to finally upgrade my tower, Im using a *gulp* Dual 1 gig G4 still, its realyl starting to show its age, and I just invested in Shake finally and am going to start doing HDCAM and HDV along with my SD stuff on a regular basis. So I know this new beast holds 16 gigs RAM, Im waiting to see what AJA does about cards using PCI EXPRESS, and they have that new video card Quadro from NVDIA I think that has 512RAM on it and costs, $1650….is this just for 3D programs or will this help with FCP, Shake, Motion alot? Anyone, what would you invest in?

[Paul] “Im waiting to see what AJA does about cards using PCI EXPRESS”

AJA announced the Kona LHe today for the new G5’s.

[Paul] “Anyone, what would you invest in?”

I would not invest in the first new G5’s. I don’t plan to replace my current G5 Dual 2.0’s any time in the immediate future. I’m probably going to wait until the Intel machines come out next year as my current Kona 2 / Fibre Channel arrays are kickin for HDCAM and DVCPro HD right now.

Everything that gets released now will be basically a “test bed” for the Intel machines so I’d rather everyone else on these forums test it all out first and then I’ll come in later when the dust settles.

But you’re going to have fun on the bleeding edge!

This will be good for motion and newr FCP plugs like the new Magic Bullet suite that offloads a lot of tasks to the GPU.

As far as I understood for a previous post PCIe is two ways while PCIX is one way. This should translate into: When plugs and apps get updated you’ll have an extra processor in the GPU for paralell rendering = great spped gains.

I tend to disagree with Walther on the point of the G5. This (most likely) is the last machine that runs with all current software. It’s IMHO a very good choice instead of jumping on the Intell wagon as soon as it comes out. THAT – my guess is – is going to be a rather bumpy experience the first 6 – 9 months or so.

    My 2 cents.

If you can wait, I’d wait untill the Intell machines come, though – as I guess the G5’s will be less price (as with the Legacy G4’s that booted into OS 9, when the G5’s came. Those were nicely priced, as the dual 2,7 Ghz is right now…)
