Export To DVD pro Question
Posted by Alexander Gittinger on October 17, 2005 at 3:34 pmHelp, please.
I need to burn a HDV project to DVD, but it needs to be shown in SD so every DVD player can play it. DVD pro manual says that you can convert from SD to HD but not the other way round. What codec do I have to use so it plays in a regular DVD player, and how do I make it play automatically. [FCP 5 Studio, 2.7MHzDual, 4GB RAM AJA LS]
Thanks for the help.Chris Poisson replied 20 years, 7 months ago 4 Members · 4 Replies -

October 17, 2005 at 3:55 pmThis could get really sticky so give yourself time to do some simple tests and test burns using a short clip.
I hope you get better advice so think twice about investing time in my approach!
Export a 1 minute segment of your your HD sequence from FCP as a short reference movie. Include some tricky audio, a transition, and some horizontal panning or fast action, if you can.
Open a new, standard DV sequence. Import your little movie. It must render, could take a long time so stick with very short clips to test the audio and transitions.
Take that to DVDSP in the usual way, don’t export to MPEG2, just import the movie directly into DVDSP and let DVDSP handle the encoding and burn your test.
AGAIN, let me repeat, this is just how I would approach this situation. Others may have a much more valid approach for you so you might want to wait for additional posts.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Why not bring the exported clip into an uncompressed sequence?
Wouldn’t that look better than rendering it down to DV?
Wouldn’t the export to DVDSP would look better?
Is there some reason it’s better to go to DV in this situation? Thanks,

October 17, 2005 at 5:33 pmIt seems to work, however the burnt DVD doesn’t play on either player not even the Apple DVD drive in the G5. Very frustrating…

I believe you are right about the uncompressed project, however, if he does DV (and this is what I would do) exporting directly to Compressor is the way to go. This prevents the DV compression so graphics look great. It also creates automatic compression markers on every cut, so motion is flawless. Finally, control over encoding in Compressor is superior to letting DVDSP do it, and at least until v2 Compressor was faster.
True, this method does tie up FCP while the encoding is going on, but it’s worth it.
A workaround is to go with an uncompressed project like you said, render a movie, and use another app like Compression Master or Squeeze to handle the encoding (again, way more control over encoding than DVDSP) in which case you can be happily editing away in FCP.
