  • Tape trouble alerts?!

Does anyone know exactly how FCP detects the “Tape Trouble” alert when capturing via deck control. I have one Panasonic PRO 50 VTR that seems to be consistent in causing this alert, though the deck itself is offering no warnings.
Does FCP sense this fault through the RS 422 connection, or does it look for continuity through the SDI video input.
I should mention that I am using an AJA IO as the intermediary.
Ultimately I am trying to locate the fault in the VTR, if I use another VTR I don’t see any fault notices from FCP.
    Any information would be appreciated.

I’d think that I’d have an authorized repair center look at the deck that causes the error messages, especially if the same tape in another machine works OK…

    Hi Jerry,
The VTR has been to Panasonic and come back with a clean bill of health. If I know where the fault is being read from I can check menu settings and or take the deck back and pin point the area of concern. The problem is that at the moment it could be coming from the time code heads, VTR control module, or any other number of areas. This is only a recent development, the VTR’s have been very reliable since we got them in 1999/2000 and have had regular servicing.

I can almost guarantee you that it’s not the deck. I have a Panasonic AJ-D440 DVRPRO deck that gives the same error in FCP 5.0.2 running under Tiger with my Aurora PipeStudio card. The Pipe also has bullt-in in RS-422. I’m having some success with my old Keyspan 28X USB to serial adaptor for RS-422 control. Something is up with Panasonic decks and FCP5/Tiger.

    Hi John,
I’m not so sure about that anymore. I have 1 AJ 950, 1 AJ 960, and an AJ 1200 and it is only the 950 that seems to be giving this error. Panasonic service here in Australia has given this machine a clean bill of health, and in other environments it works perfectly. Wierd.

Are you running OS10.4 (Tiger) and FCP5? Now I’m curious…

    Hi John,
The problem started appearing some weeks after we did that upgrade. The G5 is running Tiger, and FCP HD Studio pack (FCP 5), and the IO has the most recent update.
