Random Square pixels printing to Panasonic aj1200a
I keep getting random square pixel pops when I lay off to tape using the Panasonic aj1200a. I have cleaned the head, but it is still happening. I have monitored the output video while printing to tape and they don

First off, if you’re recording to the deck via HD-SDI, you’re adding DVCPro HD compression to the signal. So if you captured DVCPro HD and are now laying back out to tape via HD-SDI, you’re double compressing the project. When editing DVCPro HD here I capture and output via Firewire so as not to add any further compression.
Is this a rental deck or your own? If it’s a rental, check with the rental house to ensure it’s working correctly.
Are you feeding Reference to the deck? The 1200A likes a reference signal.
Also, I generally run the Kona 2 in Free Run for reference.

To be honest I think I set it up this way because I read about this setup (Output HDSDI w/ Firewire Deck control) either here on the Cow or somewhere else. I do Capture using Firewire, so if outputing using firewire is better I will switch. However, I did just try to output via firewire (To see if I was getting the same pixel prob.) and video and audio will play for about 5 seconds and then the audio goes to a continuous buzz, while the video continues, Huh??? Half stacked XServe problem? Now what’s going on?
I purchased this deck a few months back. I was the one who reported the problem with the error 52 & 53 about a month ago. I have had the deck in to Panasonic twice now for mechanical problems unrelated to this.
I’m not feeding any reference into it. How can I feed a reference signal into it?
Reference in on the Kona Control Panel is set to Free Run, although I don’t think I have anything connected to it. How should I patch this?

More about what I said about trying to lay to tape via firewire:
I tried moving media to an interna drive and it does the same thing. Video will play for about 3 seconds and then the audio drops out and there is the constant buzz. Also, the video seems to lag (once I start and stop a couple of times it gets up to speed and plays, but then the audio drops).
Now it seems I have 2 situations working against me and a deadline of about 2 days ago!!!

More about the square pixels:
They are definitly random, however there is at least one shot that seems to glitch every time. On this shot it happens when I output HDSDI or Firewire (with the dropped audio!).

Eric, caution, That only works as a short term emergency fix for capture when you have a problem with the serial connection in my experience, especially since FW is only accurate within 3-5 frames, while the serial control on the Kona 2 is frame accurate.
The artifacts you are seeing are not uncommon in this setup when trying to output. I have seen them also, as you most likely have found out the entire system slows down when the deck is attached via FW and the FW bus is NOT being used for ingest.
My guess it is a collision on the FW bus between the data streams.Gary Adcock

If you’re going to use Firewire, you could go ahead and send the HD-SDI signal to the Ref In on the deck. But the better thing to do is to pick up a Horita BSG-50 black burst generator and feed that into the Ref In.
Did you switch over to an Easy Setup for DVCPro HD before trying to lay out to tape via Firewire? Also, did you change the Video Input on the deck to Firewire In?
I’ve laid out about 14 episodes or so now and everything is clean with no random square pixeel here. Also the show has rolled well over 100 tapes in the machine during field and studio production with nothing like that. We just run the head cleaner tape on occassion to make sure it stays clean.

I will be switching to FW output and Serial control now! I just need to figure out this audio drop. Even when I play it on the time line, I get full audio/video playing for about 3 seconds and then the audio drops out. Weird!

So I took the deck down to Panasonic this morning. The repair tech, Keim, actually opened up @ 7am (That’s 2 hrs early – Talk about good customer service, this guy is awesome!) to check the deck for me. He played my tapes (the ones that seemingly had the problem) in another deck and, guess what no pixels. Then he tried my deck. Same thing. No pixels. He must think I’m crazy! The only explanation is that there was possible a power problem. Not grounded correctly. Also, I think the deck had been left on over night and was on all day.
I have a ESE ES-219A blackburst gen. Will that do?
