RAM question for FCP 5 using HDV.
Hello, I’m new to the Cow!
I was wondering who uses HDV 1080i footage in FCP and how much RAM you use?
I’ve got a G5 2.0 ghz with 1 gig of RAM – can anyone tell me the “sweet spot” for RAM?? I’m
planning to edit a feature length film after I shoot it this year.Thank you very much!

According to a very thorough test I read, 2.5 gigs is the sweet spot when considering both cost and performance. There are performance benefits when RAM is increased to 4gb, but for most users those benefits may not be enough to justify the additional cost. There are many here who will undoubtedly argue that more RAM is better — depending on indivdual workflow they may be correct. BTW, HDV performance is more related to processor and drive speed than RAM.

That sweet spot was for a DV workflow I thought, not for HDV. The HD formats all seem to want 4 gigs in my experience.
and while David is correct on how the CPU is handling the HDV content the RT functions in FCP are dependent on a combination of CPU power, Drive Speed and RAM.One other factor affecting performance– available disk space on the startup drive. when that disk is more than 80% full performance will reduce down.

Had 2 seperate bad expereinces, as did a friend who had 1 bad experience, with Crucial RAM sending the WRONG ram. Very annoying. Went with RAMJET and the service and product were both outstanding. https://www.ramjet.com/
I’ve also read from Ken Stone that you shouldn’t go over 4.5GB with FCP 5 -Don’t know what the problem would be but people have apparently been having weird issues past 4GB.
