Sony LM 1410 LCD screen
Has anybody tried using one of these (or any of the LM range) as a video monitor? Sony claim they are made for pro video monitoring. There’s a 14″ version, and a 20″ version with all the usual in and outs (the whole range is numbered 1410, 1420, 2010, and 2020).
The info I’ve read says that they give true colour. The only downside I can see is that they scale up from 640×480. I would have thought that *may* not look too nice, but if anyone has had a play about with one of these monitors it would be good to hear some feedback.
They’re cheaper than the Sony CRTs and obviously take up a lot less space… which would be ideal for someone about to set up an edit suite without vast amounts of space (like me, for example!). But naturally, I don’t want to get one if they’re not up to the job. 🙂

No way would I use any LCD screen for color correction or even for solitary monitoring of my projects. The Sony Luma series claimes to have SMPTE-C Phosphor colors, but I have not heard anything good on them yet. I suspect NAB 2006 will bring out some better LCD screens and something will emerge as the new “standard.”
I’m taking delivery tomorrow of a new Sony PVM-14L5/1 multiformat monitor. For true color reproduction, a professional Sony CRT is still the way to go.

Well, I use the LM2010 LCD in my edit suite and its not bad. Albeit, not as high of resolution as the CRTs but they are cost effective and I haven’t had any problems color correcting with them yet or I have had no complaints yet. Now, I do know for a fact that Sony no longer makes CRTs for standard def video, just the LCDs so if you really want a CRT, you’ll have to purchase a used one or find someone who still may have a new in stock. But like I said, they look great. Now I do want to mention that they have a slow refresh rate so you may see a tear in the screen during cuts on your timeline but they are cost effective and very space saving.

The Sony PVM-14″ models still seem somewhat plentiful, the 20″ models are gone and only B-Stock exists. If you’re going to purchase B-Stock, only go with a known company, I would NOT purchase something like this on eBay at auction.

If it’s not SMPTE-C phosphor accurate, I can’t use it in a broadcast situation, especially cutting broadcast HD like we’re doing now. If I was only doing corporate work, I would just go down to Best Buy and pick up a Sony Wega off the shelf as they are very very good video monitors and just feed it component or S-Video.

Hmmm, think I may be needing to check out some monitors at the Production Show in London in January…. if I find an LCD that looks good there then I’ll know what to do.. if not, it’s working out some more room form a CRT 🙂

By the way, Walter: I haven’t looked at your website for a while, but that is the best editing facilities ever!!! Cool, much better than just sitting in a white room.
I shall think of your Tom n Jerry inspired kitchen the next time I’m making a cup of tea 🙂
