Sorry if this is a stupid question but…here goes.

I’m running FC4.5 and capturing Beta via an AJA IO. My Sequence is set to Unc 8-bit NTSC and my Capture Preset is AJA Io:YPbPr Betacam 8-bit NTSC US. After capturing a clip, I drag it into my sequence, and FC wants to render it. Is this right? Or is something wrong in my settings?

I’m used to working in DV where no rendering is necessary if you capture DV and put it in a DV sequence. I need the 8-bit for keying and am using a freinds set up. I know there’s a ton more info in the 8-bit, but shouldn’t it slip seamlessly into said sequence sans silly rendering (sorry about the alliteration – I’m sleepy).

    something is not right

CMD -9 will tell you the item properties of the SEQ and the individual clips – so my guess the Seq is still set to DV!

check it out and let us Know.

OK…you’re right… but why is it doing that?

    Glad it worked for you
but as usual in things like this,
the problem is in between the floor and the keyboard.

[Matthew] “OK…you’re right… but why is it doing that?”

Because when you launch FCP, and start a New Project, Sequence 1 is automatically created by the application. The Sequence will retain whatever settings FCP is set to when you launched the app. In your case, you were working on a DV project prior to starting the uncompressed project. When you changed your A/V Settings over to 8bit Uncompressed, this tells FCP to make every Sequence from that point an 8bit NTSC uncompressed sequence. But Sequence 1 retained the old DV settings from when you launched the app.

It’s a bit of a flaw in the application that catches a lot of people. Folks don’t realize that Sequence 1 is not affected by any changes to the A/V settings. Any changes to that particular sequence must be made using the Sequence > Settings panel.

Really, no Sequence should appear in your project until AFTER you make any changes to the A/V settings.

Ok…. let’s jus make this very easy. Just always remember to set your sequence and you capture presets to the same. In other words, if you capture using the Betacam settings on the IO – make sure that it has the same compression settings as your sequence. Best thing to do is when you change your Easy Setup after you created a new project, always create a new sequence. Therefore, everything will jive.
