Is FCP 5 stable enough yet?
Posted by Dave Sullivan on October 10, 2005 at 10:26 amHello all,
I’m currently running FCP 4.5 on a dual 2.5gh G5 with 4gb of RAM. I’m using OS 10.3.9, and apart from the odd crash here & there all is well.
I recall all of the problems users had when upgrading from V4, so I’m a bit worried about upgrading to V5 unless it’s really stable…..any thoughts?
I have several projects due to come in over the next couple of weeks, so now would be the right time to upgrade. Many thanks in advance

Most problems come from people who do not update their OS properly. Do a Clean Install of Tiger, then run all the updates, then install FCP 5, run all the updates and you should be good.
Been very stable here since June.

October 10, 2005 at 12:13 pmForgot to mention, ensure that you visit the websites of every software and hardware product you use with your Mac to ensure that you’re updated to the most recent version and that there are no compatibility issues with it. For instance, I still don’t have full functionality of my Bella Keyboard using Tiger, but still get the jog / shuttle which is all I care about for the moment until their Tiger drivers are ready.

October 10, 2005 at 2:45 pmSkip Tiger and just install QT 7, then FCP 5 and you’ll have a rock solid system. I can’t speak for Tiger, but it seems that not doing a clean install of Tiger has caused many probs.
I’m rock solid with 10.3.9, QT 7, FCP 5, and a dual 1GHZ G4 MDD.

October 10, 2005 at 3:57 pmI’ve been really happy with tiger and fcp5 for months now on two machines, but i have one more thing to add. An easy way to do it is to get a new internal drive and do the install on to that. Start completely fresh with tiger & updates, then fcp5 & updates. This way you will have two separate systems on two separate drives. You can always revert back to your earlier os and version of fcp if you are having trouble by selecting the start up disk in sys perfernces and restarting. Also, it’s a good way to ensure that you don’t lose any data, as you can take your time and drag projects and other important stuff from your panther drive to your tiger drive. When you are sure you have everything you need from the old system drive you can then use it for backup and storage.

October 11, 2005 at 3:54 amI’d say hold off for now. With clean install, memory management dosen’t seem the best in 10.4.2 w/ 5.0.2. after about 3 days up, sequences start slowing down & require a restart of FCP. Some freezes with photoshop I never had under 10.3.6
I’ve got an odd bug with 5.0.2- playing the timeline at double speed & moving the mouse at the same time, playback stalls out- also the audio isn’t as smooth when listening at 2x speed as it used to be in 4.5
keep in mind that OS 10.4.3 due out later this month is purported to fix a bunch of bugs in the OS.

October 11, 2005 at 7:58 amThank you all for your input. I think I’ll wait for the OS update, and try an install on a second system drive, this seems like the safest thing to do.
Thanks again

Not seeing that here at all on any of our systems, in fact I haven’t heard of that one yet.

Ensure your photoshop is updated for Tiger. Running both Photoshop 7 and CS 2 here with no issues on Tiger.

Hmmm, strange again as 2x playback is actually better here with 5.0.2 than FCP 4 or 4.5. Could be an issue with the drives.
