I hope I explain my question clearly. I want to create a light effect (spot light), but not on a specific layer. Is this possible? I just want it out in the open where I can drag it around my comp. It seems to only work on top of a specific layer. thanks…

You could try a new Solid Layer above, White, with an oval mask (the Elliptical Mask Tool), then drop the opacity to 50% or so, and feather the Mask (click the twirly next to the Mask, Mask feather say 8 pixels). Or use the Soft Light Mode at 100% opacity. It’s worth a try.

You could also put an adjustment layer with an effect applied on top of your entire composition.

I never experimented with adjustment layers. I’ll try it…hope its not too complicated.
