  • Audio sync when playing to external monitor

Posted by George Mandl on October 5, 2005 at 2:32 pm

I am running FCP 4.5 on a G5. I have an external monitor which is being viewed through a DV deck. There is firewire running from the G5 to the DV deck, and then composite video from the deck to the monitor.

Here’s the question. I only have speakers for the computer, and not any running from the deck. Is there a way to sync the playback audio from the G5 to the visual on the monitor? It syncs to the video in the FCP window, but there’s a slight delay to the monitor, so the audio is slightly off. I’m trying to avoid having to purchase additional gear if possible.

    Thanks for all your help!

Better that you connect an A/-B switch on your speakers.
Better still to use an inexpensive mixer and use it to choose your sources.

    But to answer directly:

    Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > A/V devices > Audio: “Built-in audio Controller”

Thanks. I had a feeling someone was going to say that. I do have the settings to “built in audio” and I think that thats what causes the delay. I think what I really need is to have the monitor and some external speakers being fed from the DV deck to get the sound in sync. I was just hoping for a solution within FCP to get the most use out of my computer speakers.

    Thanks

[george dv] “…to get the most use out of my computer speakers.”

[Thax] “…connect an A/-B switch on your speakers.”

    Not exactly a major investment:

And there are many others for even less money.

Wow. I had no idea it could be that affordable. Thanks so much for your wisdom on this one.
