DVCPro and PowerBook
Looking for any suggestions as I’m a newscast director and I’m new to the whole world of FCP. My question is this: I have access to a DVCPro camera and 17″ PowerBook G4. Since the camera does not have firewire capabilities, what would be the preferred method to go from camera to PowerBook? My initial thought was to buy something like a Sony DSR11, but I’d like a less expensive alternative. Any insights or suggestions? Thank you.

Here’s the easiest, cheapest, and maybe even best route to do this.

Once you get the hang of that and decide you like it, we can talk about separate decks, digitizing cards, etc. But if you just want to get your feet wet, go with the Canopus.

Do you care about using the firewire I/O as well as retaining the image quality by digitizing in the native dvcpro codec?
If so you need to get a Panasonic vtr with firewire. The dsr-11 does not playback dvcpro only dvcam.
The DSR-1500A plays back dvcpro but with no firewire output only analog component when playing back dvcpro.
If you shoot dvcpro 50 you will need to make sure the vtr is capable of playing back dvcpro 50.

Not true!! I have a DSP-1500A and capture DVCPro via FireWire. Did it for three months on a project this past summer.
Perhaps what you were thinking of is the 1500A doesn’t record in DVCPro, it only plays it back. But it DOES spit DVCPro playback out the FW port!
But, regardless, it’s probably outside the poster’s budget.
