capturing from running camera
Hello
Next week, I have shoot where I want to capture while the camera is running (recording to tape). I hooked up everything correctly, the capture window displays video and rec timecode coming in from the camera correctly, but when I press “capture now” , I almost immediately get the following message:
“Capture now has reached then end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape has been captured succesfully”. But all it has captured is a single frame, the very first one.
When I turn to “non-controllable device”, it captures from the recording camera without a hitch, but then of course I loose all timecode information, which I need.Any suggestions?

Not that this fixes your issue with capture now, I think I would invest in (or rent) a firestore or similar capture drive, then take it back to the system and dump it to my drive and import it. I’m sure others here will find a fix for your exact problem, but I don’t think I’d count on it working flawlessly during a shoot, having never tested it. Even if you get past this issue, what if something else creeps into the equation at the last second? You could be troubleshooting when you should be shooting, and if your like most people in this business, time is money, and troubleshooting time, during a shoot, is like throwing that money away.
Having said that, I can’t personally endorse the firestore or any other “live” capture drive, because I’ve not actually used one. I can, however, endorse the idea of having a sure thing at a shoot.
Also, maybe I’m wrong about this altogether. Maybe others are sucessfully doing exactly what you want to do. I’m just trying to be devil’s advocate here ’cause I know how expensive shoots can get, especially failed ones.

The only way to capture a live feed is the way you did it…uncontrollable device. If you need the timecode, then you are going to have to shoot to tape first, then capture. It is the tape that contains the timecode.

It would be pretty easy to “create” a matching TC based on the tape after your live capture.
Just capture a few of seconds from the DV tape at the start of your edit and then carefully “frame-match” the two by sight, then use the “match TC” feature to create a matching TC on your “live-captured” file.

That sounds like an excellent solution! Will give this a try before we start shooting.
We have a clapperboard, so matching the tc’s shouldn’t be too difficult.
