I have been picking up a lot of hints on how to treat external drives from your answers to people having trouble with Lacie and other Firewire external drives.

I wondered, if you had time, could you please come up with a definitive list of do’s and don’ts for ensuring their smooth running. The way you handle them obviously works.

    Cheers

    Hi Adam,

There’s really not a whole lot to it, here’s the basics of what I do.

Never connect a drive while it is powered up.

Now with a LaCie drive, they will power up automatically when the Mac is on so I will generally hook them up when the Mac is off. However, if the Mac is running, I will connect the FW cable first, then the power cable.

Never disconnect a drive while it is powered up.

Never move a drive while it is powered up.

Eject the drive when you want to disconnect it while the Mac is running.

When transporting the drives to another location, I travel them in their original boxes or padded boxes.

I erase my drives after every project or at least every 3 months.

My shop is fully air conditioned and it’s never set above 73 degrees when in operation. That’s a biggy with all the heat generated from everything running here.

That’s pretty much it. Hope that’s somewhat helpful!

Did you realize that on some of the Lacie drives, the big blue light is a power on/off button?

Yep, but they only turn the drive Off really. If your Mac is turned on, the LaCie will automatically power itself up when attached to the Mac. That’s really the only feature I don’t like about those drives.
