KRK Rokit 5 self powered audio monitors. I think they’re $150/each. I run them in my primary suite and am about to put some in my secondary suite.

Those Rokit 5’s are fantastic, and the KRK V4’s are even better, I have a set of each. The V4’s are about $200 each at fullcompass.com.

I have Event 20/20 BAS speakers that are great (but way out of your price range).
The Event Tuned Series would be in the ballpark for you and are also very good.
You can get the TR5 for $300 a pair and the TR6 for $400, both are bi-amped.
If you’re looking for passive speakers, the 20/20 and others in their line come that way too.

    What does “biamplified mean”?

Separate amps for the ‘tweets’ and ‘woofers’ or one of the ‘highs’ and one for the ‘lows’. This usually translates to better sound as the amps are tailored to different frequencies.

I found that mounting your speakers on the wall or on seperate stands and off the hollow body of your editing console will greatly improve the sound. My Tannoys are abut one foot higher than my ears and slightly pointing down. There was a huge increase in fidelity when I did this.

[Peter McAuley] “I found that mounting your speakers on the wall or on seperate stands and off the hollow body of your editing console will greatly improve the sound.”

Excellent advice. I did the same with my speakers which sit on independent stands at just above ear level. Some simple galvanized pipe and wood from Home Depot and I had two very nice speaker stands.

I also added some Auralex speaker pads to further isolate the speakers and these added even more fidelity to the sound.
