HDV / Intermediate codec / Workflow
I’m doing a multi-screen project for an exhibition installation. Three simultaneous streams video, eventually played back from either synced DVD players or hard drives (SD MPEG-2).
Three screens of PAL-res video butted together in my composition (with a bit of overscan overlap) work out at about 2000 pixels across and 576 high.
I’ve shot in HDV. Currently test-editing in native HDV. About three streams of HDV running simultaneously, sometimes four. All looks great. But when I add my blends, masks, titles, blah and blah, my dual 1.8 G5 with 4Gb RAM wants to take 19 hours to render a minute of video at this size.
So I reason my CPU can’t handle decompressing all those streams plus doing the blends etc. My understanding is I would be better off converting my footage to either DVCProHD or Apple Intermediate Codec, or something else…
Before I recapture from tape – any advice on what codec will look better? Any advice on whether I could just do a Batch Export from my already captured files to either codec, rather than recapturing?
Thanks in advance –
