  • problems with write-on effect/masking text and camera moves

    Hi,

I’m having the worst trouble trying to make text write on and keep it on the surface that I write it on when I move the camera. I’ve tried everything. The camera starts at a 118 degree z-axis rotation. The layers underneath the text respond with no problem, but I can’t get the text to do so as well. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Making the text, masking it and using the stroke effect. If I put it in a precomp and didn’t collapse transform, it would stay on the screen where it was instead of on the surface when I moved the camera. If I did collapse, the text would disappear completely.

I tried creating the text, masking it and using the write on with copying the text into the brush position. This would make the effect occur at a spot that was different from where the actual text was. (and I don’t really want to have to rotoscope all of my text with the write on effect if it can be avoided.)

I tried creating the text, rotating it before I masked it and then adding the stroke effect. For some reason, the stroke would be rotated and wouldn’t be above my masks. The same happened with the write on effect. I also tried using the transform effect before the stroke and using that rotation, but it continued to ahve the stroke effect rotated from the actual text.

At this point I’m pulling out my hair trying to figure it out. I really don’t want to have to set keyframes for the write on effect if I don’t have to because it’s a heavily CG’d spot, and it’s only a PSA. I don’t want to have to put more time in it than necessary. Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,

Sorry I didn’t make my intent completely clear. That wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do. My design is a basic PSA where I’m acting like there’s a huge table and pieces of notepaper on the table. I’m having the text write on to the paper. What I want to have happen is have the camera move to another “piece of paper” on the table and have a different CG write on. However, I obviously want the text to stay with the piece of paper after it’s written onto it. I’ve been trying to do the write-on move using masks and either stroke or write-on. I create the text, put it in a precomp and create the masks over the precomp (I tried putting the masks over the text before the precomp, but that wouldnt’ work at all.) Then I apply the effect. When it does work, the text stays in the same place on the screen, and i don’t want to have to try and follow it with the text precomp’s position perameter. However, it often doesn’t work as the mask will be over the letters, but the stroke will be diagonal and above the text itself. I hope I’ve made it a little clearer.

Essentially, I want the camera movement to affect the stroked text. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hmm … Here’s what I did:

    1. make “paper” comp
    2. add new solid
    3. add text
    4. add solid, draw mask to match text, apply stroke, animate end of stroke value
    5. make “main” comp
    6. drag “paper” comp into main comp
    7. make “paper” layer 3D (do not switch on cont.raster.)
    8. add 3d camera
    9. orient paper layer in 3D
    10. animate camera

The text follows the paper because they’re in the same sub-comp. The paper moves appropriately to the camera because they’re in the same main comp. Yes?

This worked. I never thought of just creating a separate solid for the text. Thank you both very much for your help. I really appreciate it!
