Setting video Levels when digitizing analog
Posted by Jim Eckes on August 25, 2005 at 9:29 pmI’m running FCP V5 on a g5 dual through a AJA Kona LS card. I’m digitizing media from Beta SP as an analog signal through the Kona card.
Can I set my video input levels in FCP. It looks as though I have the option under “Clip Settings” but the sliders are greyed out.Jim Eckes replied 20 years, 8 months ago 5 Members · 9 Replies -

August 25, 2005 at 9:31 pmdownload the Kona Control Panel from aja’s website–I think that has Proc Amp controls. You won’t be able to do it in FCP, but if you open up the Control Panel Application you can adjust video level, black, etc.

August 25, 2005 at 9:37 pmAs far as I know, that feature is available on the Kona IO card and not the Kona LS card. Am I right?

August 26, 2005 at 1:35 amAdjust the levels with your mixer. You do have a mixer attached…don’t you?

August 26, 2005 at 2:07 amthe video is going through a component color corrector, so yes i can correct on input, but i would like to be able to store my levels for each tape so when
i batch digitize in hi-res later, the levels will match the original input. final cut pro should be able to do this, i just can’t find it. -

August 26, 2005 at 2:29 ammy bad, I misread your first post. I thought you were talking about anolog audio levels.
Sadly, the answer to your original question is no. On the Avid your tape log info stores all that info, but there is no such file created in FCP. Sorry.Michael Alberts

August 26, 2005 at 4:23 amIt should be better than avid actually because these settings are stored with each individual clip, not just the tape. I always thought it kinda odd that Avid did it by tape. How many times has your entire tape required the same exact proc settings? However, if Kona doesn’t support the sliders (that are greyed out) you’re out of luck. I think cinewave did, and I’m surprised all the pci cards don’t.

August 26, 2005 at 3:12 pmI’ve been having discussions with the AJA Kona tech and he says the engineers are aware of the issue and it’s “on the wish list”. We all know what that means, but at least they are aware of it. The Media100 I used to work on had the option of storing vid levels for each and every clip. While generally, settings for an individual tape are enough, sometimes you get a shot or two that require a nudge in one direction or the other. The ability to re-digitize and have the levels follow is invaluable.

August 26, 2005 at 3:14 pmLike I mentioned in another post, the AJA Kona tech told me the engineers are aware of the problem and it’s “on the wish list”. We’ll see where that goes.
At any rate, my question has been answered, thank you. I’ll move forward.
