KONA2 FCP to AVID
Hi there
Trying to find a generic solution that would allow us to hand the shot Varicam footage on an external drive to the clients that don’t have budget for DVCPRO HD deck rental but want to step into the HD domain.
Anyone out there have a solution for getting DVCPRO HD off a Varicam through the KONA2 & FCP to a format that AVID can import for editing DVCPRO HD?What would be yummy is to throw a .mov extension on the end of the FCP media files for import into an AVID that has Quicktime installed and has the DCVPRO HD codec on it. But my gut feel is that that would be way to easy to actually work…
The solution I’m playing with would implies doing a conversion from the raw FCP media files to Quicktime using DVCPRO HD 720p60. (But the scaling to 1280×720 would have to be done manually from the downscaled actual varicam pixels). Anyone walked down this road before? Is this still too easy to work?

As long as your Avid has the same QuickTime codec as what you are capturing in FCP, you should be able to import them into Avid. FCP captures ARE QuickTime files, the extention doesn’t need to be there if you are on a Mac. On a PC, you might have to add the extention.
We do this sometimes here, but usually have to export the clip to a QuickTime with Animation codec. But that’s because the Avids are on PC’s and they don’t have the right codec installed.

I don’t know it his is useful, but on the AJA website you can find the AJA Windows Quick Time codec. So, if this AVID works on a PC, this codec maight be useful

This might be a ninny question, but is it right to assume then that the media MUST BE converted to OMF for AVID, or is it possible to do this in another way that allows the original FCP media to be imported somehow directly into it?

I don’t think that the DVCPRO HD codec is in QuickTime 6.5 for PC, is it? I’m under the impression that it only gets installed on a Mac even inly when FCP is installed…
Seems like the PC version 7 is about to fly, but I don’t see the DCVPRO HD codec on the list.So I’m assuming that a PC AVID would not be able to open QuickTime based DVCPRO HD captured with FCP and added the .mov extension?

Nope, Avid makes it’s own copy of everything to the best of my knowledge. It will only refer to the original file when performing an operation like Bacth Import.

I didn’t know they had codecs for PCs to read KONA captured media. Good to know.

What I understand is that the DVDPRO HD codec comes from Panasonic. You could capture in uncompressed, but of course that would take much more disk space

Hmm… you’ve got a point there… We’ve been using the AJA/Blackmagic uncompressed codec for capture, and based on what Itamar said it looks like they have codecs for PC now (I saw something about that at NAB too) so that might work for me, but for you… I’d check to be sure that those DVCPro HD codec doesn’t exist for PC. I’m assuming that some PC app besides Avid must handle that codec (probably Premiere). If not, the “workaround” is to use something like the Animation codec export. That is a real pain, I know.
We are about to config a X-San in the next year or so, and I’m trying to devise a way for the Avids to “see” the X-Serve to access media (read-only) through an ethernet network. This will not be ideal, but it’s about as close as I can come to sharing some media with the Avids. We are doing this becuase our Unity has limited space, and there are a lot of clips that we would like to keep digitized for repeated use. Since storage is so much less expensive with X-Serve we can keep more footage there and the Avids will have access to them, albeit with the process of having to import each clip. And that is if I can get a codec to be truly compatible across platform.
