I exported some full-res clips from FCP as Uncompressed 10-bit NTSC self-contained QuickTime movies to put into a montage at home over the weekend using AfterFX 6.5 on a PC. When I try to open these QT movies on my PC, I’m missing the required codec. As primarily an AE guy, I’m accustomed to “uncompressed” renders that’ll open on any platform with any QT enabled software so I didn’t think about FCP using a proprietary codec to render uncompressed QT movies. Please help me avoid driving 25 miles back to the office and waiting the hour it took to transfer these files by telling me there’s a way to get this codec onto a PC so I can use these QT movies.

    hi Dave

if you haven’t started driving yet, you might try using the SheerVideo codec to read it.
i haven’t tried this codec yet, but was just looking at the bitjazz website … i could be misreading it but they do seem to be able to ‘read’ alot of formats and the have a PC qt component. the full component isn’t free, but they do have a free ‘reader’ so it might be worth a shot.

    cheers

SheerVideo won’t read the files either, but I never mind having an additional codec in my arsenal so thanks.

    ah well, worth a shot.

i think the issue is that Quicktime for Windows and Quicktime for Mac are clearly not equal (which is not altogether suprising).
we use an intermediate codec to go between AE on the PC and FCP on the Mac, but thats because we’re using DVCPRO50 which we know does not have PC quicktime support.

of course, that doesn’t help you. i’m not really a PC guy so don’t knw what to suggest … the thing is, realistically, you might spend more time trying to ‘fix’ it than it would take to drive back to work and do it agian.

sorry i couldn’t be more helpful

Are you using QT pro on your windows machine? I’m guessing but maybe QT pro unlocks the uncompressed codecs.

FCP’s Uncompressed codecs are not available for Windows.

You can download and install the Windows version of the Blackmagic codecs, which are compatible.

Thanks. I looked aat Black Magic, but didn’t try it because they only listed the codec as for XP…I’m on 2K and have good reason for stay with it for now. I think I’ll try it anyway…hope nothing blows up.
