I get this when I try to import an edl from a avid system. I get to open the edl on a avid adrenaline without a problem, but FCP just won’t do it. I get the error “badly formatte edl”.

Is it that there are some effect laying about causing this to happen? I’ll check the timeline but…

    Any help?

    Thanks

Try opening in a text editor. Make sure all columns line up properly, and and take out any non-essential header information. This works on many other NLEs, it might work on FCP too.

dude, what’s non essensial information on an EDL? I have never opened an edl data sheet. I have never actually used FCP before. I just know the online is going to be done on FCP and the DI onto a big grading suite and then printed on 35mm. It was shot on HDV but offlined at DV res and also at 15:1s. I hope the fact there are mixed resolutions is not causing the problem….

Just checking, what setting should I choose when importing the EDL. HDV settings right?

    Please, some help!!

    Thanks

You didn’ happen to email the EDL did you? I know sometimes the EDL gets corrupted if you try to do this. If you are transferring the EDL in an environment where possible corruption could occur, try protecting the EDL by using Stuffit or some other archival software (zip).

    dude, it was that!!!

I zipped it and voila!! I remember the guy at framestore told me about this….

    awesome!!

Cheers, can’t imagine the weight off my shoulders…. the director is showing up in 20 minutes and I’ll be able to reassure him there won’t be any problems… Imagine if something goes wrong when you are paying

    Samuel,

Yikes, I’m very good at EDL cleaning and such stuff normally, but an HDV EDL sounds awfully scary to me, since it refers to video information (not actual frames) coming from a long GOP MPEG2 source. The fact that you’re headed to a color grading facility and also going to to make an IP, neither cheap propositions, scares me further. I hesitate to offer advice to you on this job as you are breaking new ground in many ways…

If you care to send me the file for examination I’ll be happy to take a peek and see if I spot any of the extraneous header info I ealier referred to.
