FCP I/O help needed
I want to switch from Media 100 to FCP (Apple G5). I plan on working mainly in BetaSP, but also have a HDV/DV Sony FX1 camera too.
I’ve checked out the Kona LS & Black Magic cards. But they are very limited in outputs. What do you guys recommend for an I/O card that will allow Component I/O for my Beta deck, S-video or RGB for my NTSC monitor and also composite for my VHS dubbing decks.
My current M100 system breakout box allows simultaneous output of all those formats. Great to not have to patch every time.

You will need an aja kona 2 (for your hd-sdi needs, kona 2 also has analog component out in either sd or hd). For analog in you will need the aja io la. Both work and play nice together.
Blackmagic has the multibridge, but at this point I think it’s still vaporware. they have been having some manufacturing problems.
I have both products and aja has worked best for me. THey have great support and their products work.

Hi Ernie,
Take a look at the Convergent Design SD-Connect. It offers all the analog I/O along with SDI I/O as well. It converts the video/audio to either DV over 1394 or uncompressed over 1394 with our drivers for FCP.

If all you need is Analog I/O for the devices, then the AJA Io LA will work just fine. It also works in tandem with the Kona 2 which you may want to add later for HD-SDI I/O.

I agree totally. Aja is the closest integrated of the I/O companies with Apple. I’ve heard
great things about Black Magic, but as a user of AJA products, I can’t give them a high
enough recommendation. Their gear is excellent.I also have an SD-Connect. It is not a perfect box. It has no software controls within
your computer, everything is outboard and controllable by a single scroll wheel. This
is a grand idea, one wheel to do everything. In practice, there is submenu after submenu
and it’s a tedious contol scheme. I’ve also had problems with the SD losing deck control
at times, especially when I’m shuttling back and forth. It will do the job, but there are
better products that are integrated with FCP. I bought it to convert DV over firewire to
SDI. If I had to do it over again I’d have just bought an SDI DV deck.Stick with AJA products. They are rock-solid.

I have the AJA I/O and I have just about every input connected to something.
SDI in from the routing system. Component (Y,R,B)with digital audio from my DVCPro 750. S-Video from a DVD player and Composit video from VHS. The DVD and VHS decks, and some other audio sources, come in analog through a mixer.
The best part is all the switching takes place in the record tool. Of course, in FCP 5 I have to close and re-open the record tool when I make changes, but in FCP 4.5 I didn’t.
Plus the AJA is rock solid. We have some bays where we use it at DV quality and some where we use it as 8-bit uncompressed.
