need Media Manager advice
Posted by Mike Weber on August 1, 2005 at 10:57 pmHello
I’m trying to do something simple, but I keep hitting my head against the wall:
I digitized a single 30 minute clip from a DV tape. I dropped it into the timeline, and edited it down to 3 minutes. Now, I want to throw away the 30 minute DV file, and redigitize just the 3 minutes I need. Every way I’ve tried, FCP wants to redigitize the entire 30 minutes. Can someone give me a quick step by step process? I’ve tried the manual, using the example in Vol 4, pg 97, but it’s not working for me. I assume the problem has something to do with everything coming from the same original clip, but there must be a way to do this correctly Please help! I’m using FCP 5.02.
thanks –
Mike

August 1, 2005 at 11:31 pmSelect (single click) your edited timeline. Create an offline project in the media manager using the settings you need (dv, 8-bit uncompressed, whatever).
be sure to uncheck or deselect the “include affiliate clips outside selection”
also make sure the “delete unused media from duplicated sequences” is checked or selected.
this will create a new project with a timeline and the associated (edited) clips.
Hope this helps.

August 2, 2005 at 12:55 amMedia Manager doesn’t work so well in FCP 5. Have you done a lot of effects in the timeline (moves, scaling, filters, etc.)? If not, it’s probably easier just to export an EDL (File>Export>EDL) than using MM. Export the EDL, probably using the CMX3600 setting, and then reimport the EDL. Then right-click (or control-click) on the new sequence created by the EDL and select Batch Capture, and you’ll be able to specify how you want to recapture the clips.
If you’ve done lots of effects, keep trying different methods with Media Manager (check out FCP tips at http://www.kenstone.net), otherwise you’ll have to copy and paste all your effects from the old timeline to the new EDL one.
Good luck-

August 2, 2005 at 5:28 pmHi Jeremy
Thanks for your repsonse. I tried what you said and unfortanately it didn’t work. Here’s exactly what I did:
– Single clicked sequence
– Opened Media Manager
– Set it like this:
Media: Create offline
Set sequences to DV NTSC 48 kHz
checked Include master clips outside selection
checked Delete unused media drom duplicated items
unchecked Use Handles
tnchecked Include affiliate clips outside selection
Base media file names on exisiting file names
Project: checked Include nonactive multipclip anglesAfter doing all that, a new project was made. The media is offline, both in my Master Clips folder and in the sequence.
I single clicked the sequence, and then chose Batch Capture from the File menu
Batch Capture window:
Capture: All Selected Items
Optoins: checked Use Logged Clip Settings (also tried unchecked)
Catpure preset: DV NTSC 48 kHzAt the bottom, under total media time, it says the length of the original big clip, not the sum of the edit clips. When I click OK, again it indicates that it will capture one clip with the original length. Any ideas?
I read Joe’s response too, as well as some discussion from a couple of weeks ago about similar problems in FCP 5. I’m coming over from Media 100, and don’t have much experience with FCP 4.5 or earlier regarding the media manager, so it’s hard for me to judge if what’s going on is “normal” or not. It sure seems difficult.
Thanks again for your time and advice –
Mike

August 2, 2005 at 5:42 pmI think I forgot to tell you to uncheck “include master clips outside selection”
I do this process fairly often for uprezzing (i wouldn’t say all of the time) and it works fine for me.
Media100 had the most elegant offline/online workflow that I have worked with. The FCP workflow is just different and you will have to start thinking different than you did with Media 100. As a whole, FCP has brought much more creative joy than Media100 did though, but that’s a different discussion.
let me know if this works for you, and thanks for posting all of your settings, that helps a lot.

August 2, 2005 at 6:16 pmHey, no prob. Glad it worked for you. You have just learned how to Low-rez->Hi-rez a project (or offline-online; conform; Uprez; whatever the kids are calling it these days). the only thing you would do different is change your sequence settings to DV50, 8-bit, or 10-bit, whatever you choose to use as an ‘online’ codec. Also, Joe Murray is right, if you decide to use this method, be vary wary of effects, transitions, and super wary of speed effects and nested items. It is wise to unnest your nested items, and you can get around the speed effect problems if you put the original unaffected clip on the timeline in it’s entirety at the end of your program. If you sped up a clip a 10 second clip 80% and the clip is now 2 seconds long, be sure to put the original 10 second clip on your timeline before you do the media managing.
Good luck and godspeed.
jeremy
PS Be patient with the Media 100 to FCP migration. once you learn FCP you will be totally fine and moving much faster than media 100.

August 4, 2005 at 6:03 pmMaybe its because I’ve been working w/ FCP so long, but I avoid the MM like the plague.
I tend to work on projects that have massive amounts of talking head footage (for which the producers will not pay for transcripts). I just capture large chunks – usually at reduced res – edit and then when the time comes recapture I export the sequence as an EDL then import the EDL to a new sequence and recapture from that. Its simple and quick and has never failed to work for me as long as proper reel info is logged.

April 21, 2008 at 9:07 pmI’m really struggling with this as well despite having read the above posts carefully
as I can (after a 12 hour day…. )I’m using Final Cut 6.02
I’ve tried both the media manager method and the EDL export-import method. With the media manager method I get the same problem – it wants to capture
the whole tape.
(I remembered to uncheck “include master clips outside selection” )With the EDL export (CMX3600) when i import it the sequence is empty.
Has anyone else found a common mistake not mentioned so far – some setting somewhere
that a newcomer to FCP may have missed?MacPro Dual 2.66, 2GB Ram, NVIDIA 7300, OSX 10.4.10, FCS2

April 21, 2008 at 9:15 pmDid you Check “Delete unused media”? How do you know it wants to capture the whole tape? Does it need to capture the whole tape? Explain your timeline a little but further.
EDL is not a very good way to go for this.
