When I try to edit to tape it says I am trying to output the project with different compression settings than currently selected. What does this mean and how do I get around it? Need to make a master tape!!!

Do you mean PRINT to Video, or EDIT to Tape?

They are not the same thing and require different kinds of hook-ups (and decks).

Are you making a DV project?
What kind of deck or camcorder are you using?

If you just want to RECORD your timeline,
you can either use “Print to Video” or just hit record on your deck/camcorder and PLAY the timeline.

Just trying to make a master tape with program starting at 01:00:00:00. Projects were all shot on DV, but have to be mastered out to BetaSP. What is the best way to do this? I read somewhere that Final Cut will not send Timecode to decks? Sorry this is all new to me and I’m kind of lost. 🙂

this is really common and I wouldn’t describe it as a bug but almost.

Make sure you click on the sequence you are playing out before you ETT. You should see colour bars in the preview window before you hit ETT.

Edit to tape edits whatever is in the viewer onto your tape. Is your sequence in the viewer, or is in open, in the canvas and timeline? If it’s open in the timeline, then drag it from the bin or project window to the viewer window.

Your error is very common when someone is trying to edit to tape with nothing in the viewer but a black slug, which is not DV compression. That’s what the error is telling you – that the black in the viewer is not the right format to output to DV.
